"Make a Difference Day"

Stand Down

Saturday, October 17, 2009

The event was held at "The Rebuild Center" also called "The Tompson Center" of  St. Joseph Catholic Church on Tulane Ave. in New Orleans.

This "Day" was designed to give veterans a "hand up" not a "hand down".  The Vets received GI benefit counseling and help.  There were stations where they could get information on the most basic of services.  There was a chaplain available, basic physical health  and mental care screening, immunizations (flu shots), hygiene kits and winter clothing.

Each Vet had a punch card that ensured that they didn't miss a station! Now that is organization!

For Lunch we supplied:

Mixed Green Salad with Ranch Dressing

Country Coleslaw

Homestyle Potato Salad with Jalapeños

2 - 12 gallon pots of Throwdown Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya

French Bread, and Chocolate Chip Cookies

There were other donations of Soft Drinks, 4 LARGE pans of Pulled BBQ Pork, and soft Rolls.

Many others donated their time and efforts to serve the meal and drinks.  All in all, the crew served over 250 plus hot lunches to the homeless and over 60 to VOA in just over an hours time.  Now let me tell you that is organization!

My good friend, Mr. Al Kohorst of the VOA got me involved in this very special event, I owe him one!Myself with Al Kohorst

HEY, I can lift a pot!! With HELP!

These ladies were soooooo much fun, we joked and teased with them while working on the food service line they made the work seem like play! Thanks, Ladies! (to my lost, I don't remember their names, IF anyone can help me fill theirs in I would be most appreciative!)

Thank You letter, from the VOA!
